A Letter From the Camp Director

Dear Scouts and Scouters,

Hello and welcome to the Canyon Camp website! On behalf of our staff, we would like to thank you for considering coming to Canyon Camp this next summer for a week of amping adventure! For nearly 90 years, Canyon Camp has been committed to providing a quality Scouting experience for every guest that walks through our gates. This tradition of spreading the “Spirit of Canyon Camp” is something we aim to continue and inspire in all not only this summer but future summers to come.

On this website, you will find a lot of information all about Canyon Camp. If you are looking for more information about our program areas and camp facility, please check out the 'Summer Camp' tab. If you are looking for helpful files and links to help you plan for your week at camp, please check the 'Resources' tab. Here you will find our summer Program Schedule, merit badge sign-up, a list of all costs and pre-requisites for each of our 55+ merit badges offered, further information about our specialty programs, and so much more!

As you’ll soon see, there is a lot of program activities for Scouts and Leaders to choose from! Because of this, we would like to bring a few notable highlights to your attention:

  • We are very proud of our fun COPE adventure area, which include an 600+ foot Zip Line, a four line auto-belay Climbing Wall, an eight obstacle High Ropes Course, and a new Low COPE Course! Come challenge yourself and give it a try this summer!

  • Scouts don't just take merit badges at Canyon Camp, they EARN them! Your Scouts will have the opportunity to choose from over 55 Merit Badges available across our program areas, which cater to a variety of skill levels and interests. Most second, third, and fourth year Scouts take four to five merit badges of their choice, leaving some schedule room for free time, Pioneer Potpourri activities, or O.W.L. program activities!

  • Our first-year Scouts love joining the Canyon Ranger program, which helps Scouts earn 50+ requirements towards First Class rank, travel to different areas of camp, and still provide scheduled time to attend Pioneer Potpourri activities and/or earn a couple merit badges!

  • Never heard of Pioneer Potpourri before? It's the FUN area of camp, full of different hands-on activities inspired by the days of pioneer living. All ages are welcome, no sign-up required, just show up when you'd like!

  • For older Scouts and leaders, the O.W.L. program (Outdoor Wilderness League) aims to bring a taste of high adventure to your week at Canyon Camp. Activities are offered a la carte style, pick and choose the program activities and tasks you'd like to complete in order to join the Outdoor Wilderness League!

  • New training sessions and activities are offered for adult Leaders each summer, including two Unit Leader Socials. Leaders also have the opportunity to earn the Camp Leader Award after a week of participation and service to youth at camp!

We are extremely proud to serve Scouts BSA units of all sizes and styles from across the American Midwest. From small communities in NW Illinois, SW Wisconsin, and Eastern Iowa, as well as from cities such as Rockford, Chicago, Peoria, Bloomington, Madison, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Dubuque, the Quad Cities, and Des Moines, Canyon Camp is the place where the Scout handbook comes alive! Join us this summer - you won't regret it!

Once again, thank you for choosing to spend some of your time with us. If you have any questions for camp leadership, please don't hesitate to send us an email at canyoncamp@blackhawkscouting.org. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

Yours in Scouting,
