Horsemanship Merit Badge at Canyon Camp

Have you ever wanted to ride the plains like the cowboys and cowgirls of old? We may not be able to bring back the Wild West, but we can offer Horsemanship Merit Badge!

This has been a long sought out program for Canyon Camp and we are very excited about this opportunity! Horseback riding is a life long skill but is not the only part of the merit badge, Scouts will learn about horse's anatomy, veterinary needs, and care. Horsemanship merit badge is a great opportunity for anyone interested in working with horses or just looking to learn more about the animals that helped us get around before technological advances, like the automobile.

We will offer it this summer by the courtesy of Shenandoah Riding Center in Galena, IL, From 10:00-11:50 AM (2 Hours Block) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday meeting at the Archery Range. With an exception to Week 3 (Tuesday), the field trip to Shenandoah Riding Center will take place on Friday and transportation will be provided.

Sign-Up Considerations

Taking Horsemanship MB will have a cost of $75 that will be paid during your week at Canyon Camp. We are very excited for this opportunity, but we anticipate a high demand for this new MB opportunity this summer. We have a limit of 12 participants for Horsemanship MB each week, so if we receive more than 12 Scouts who sign-up for this opportunity, then we will have to prioritize older Scouts and then use first come, first serve for any tiebreakers. We will confirm this list on Monday during you week at camp and will keep in close communication if we have to have Scouts take a different program opportunity.
