Papke Receives Medal of Merit

Join us in congratulating Troy Papke on receiving the Medal of Merit. Troy has served on Canyon Camp Staff and was honored this summer for his act of service in providing aid to his father during a major health event.

From the Blackhawk Area Council's September Courier, "The Medal of Merit is awarded to Scouts and Scouters who have performed some act of meritorious service above and beyond what is normally expected of a youth or adult member of the Boy Scouts of America. We had the opportunity this summer to bestow this prestigious award to our White Eagle District Scout Troy!

Troy was out with his father at a lake fishing when suddenly his father collapsed and fell into the water. Troy ran to his father’s aid and pulled him from the water. His father had gone into cardiac arrest. Troy sought aid from another to help administer CPR and notify the authorities. When help arrived, he was able to guide the EMS to the scene. Later, Troy was told by his father’s doctors that had he not intervened, his father would have lost his life. Troy attributes his quick thinking, ability to stay calm, and his first aid skills to what he learned being a Scout. It was our honor to present Troy with the Medal of Merit at the very last Family Night at Canyon Camp where Troy has served as a Camp Staff Member."

Troy, congratulations on this high honor. We are proud to have you within the ranks of the Canyon Camp Staff serving the many Scouts who come to Camp each and every year.
